My featured album this week is Santana's "Guitar Heaven", released September 21st. 2010. Like his album Supernatural, there are a wide variety of vocalists, but this time it's all covers of popular rock songs. Of course, Santana adds his signature "shredding" to each song. For the most part, it's just a fun new take on songs everyone has heard a thousand times.
I found this write-up about the album:
"Producer Clive Davis explained that he anticipated criticism, because there can be a negative connotation with remaking classic songs, but he knew that, if anyone could do it, it was Santana, so he let him "soar and do his thing." Davis explained that only songs that "inspired" Carlos were selected, and that he wanted to pay homage to them, to show just how long a great song could last in the evolution of music, especially in the days of digital and electronic focus.

To illustrate this point, the first single off 'Guitar Heaven' is a special tribute to George Harrison, 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,' featuring Santana, indie.arie and Yo-Yo Ma. Santana explained that not only is the track his personal favorite on the album, Olivia Harrison, the former Beatle's widow, apparently told Santana that when she heard the rendition, "it made me jump for joy and cry at the same time."
Like my man Santana, the George Harrison song is my favorite too. The vocals are lush and Santana's soloing is over the top but good. While I'm no fan of Deep Purple, I actually like the "Smoke on the Water" cover quite a bit.
