New Music Sunday 6 - Pomplamoose

Who says TV commercials are all bad? The Hyundai holiday ads that have been airing recently led me to Pomplamoose, and now I'm hooked on another web-based music group.

Pecking around Google for details, I found that the Hyundai ad production was handled by Nataly Dawn and Jack Conte, a music duo and real couple who comprise Pomplamoose. Hyundai drove cars to their house near San Francisco and let the pair mimic their own video series while performing three Christmas songs.

Nataly sings and plays bass. Jack plays drums, keys, guitar and likely anything he wants to. They are young, goofy and super talented. I read that some people think Nataly stares oddly during her singing, but like many others, I think her quirky performance adds to her cuteness. Pomplamoose often puts a video log at the end of their songs, and this sort of gives you a glimpse into why their personalities show through in the songs.

Apparently Nataly edits the videos together to make "VideoSongs", which per their web site has two rules: "What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice), and if you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds)".

I figure I'm probably going to be more geeked-out over all the music production captured in the videos than most people, but I can't get over how how well recorded/produced these songs are (done in their living room) and how clever the videos are. I think I'm also jealous of all their equipment.  Sigh.

In addition to their own compositions, Pomplamoose has released a whole album of covers, including Michael Jackson's Beat It and September by Earth Wind and Fire.  My favorite is their cover of Telephone by Lady Gaga. Their version is awesome! Be sure to have a cup of coffee or a good night's sleep before watching it because the editing is kinetic. Another Day is an original song off their latest EP that is quite good. Unlike the mediorce audio quality on many YouTube videos, the sound quality on their stuff is excellent. They also sell their songs on iTunes, but I find that the VideoSong is the best way to enjoy this duo. As a late addition, I also want to provide a link to another great song, Expiration Date.

Just watched the Telephone video they did by Lady Gaga. Did you find out how long it takes them to create and edit their videos? I love the fresh artistic-ness of them all! :)

Hi Sarah! I don't know how long it takes them to make the videos, but it must take a while since there are often so many images running at once. I think it's a great way to understand the recording process since you see each sound being captured.

Well I took Jessica's advice and emailed Pomplamoose to gush at them & point them to the blog. Jack wrote me back! Here is my email and his response:

Hi Nataly and Jack,

I just wanted to say that I'm a new fan and very excited about your "TV" show! I also donated to the book drive and thoroughly enjoyed your Christmas songs.

This past week I did a feature on Pomplamoose on my blog. If you have a second, you can see it here:
