It's been a long time since I've written a post about a band. I've been meaning to review The Silver Seas, but never motivated on that. Luckily, this month has been pretty fruitful in regards to new music. I've been listening to new Incubus, the latest OneRepublic and the band I want to write about tonight: Young The Giant.
Seems like a lot of bands are following this naming format these days. In the last year I've listened to albums from Minus The Bear, Portugal. The Man and Foster The People. Reminds me of when a lot of bands were naming themselves after cities and states.
From CommonCircus.com:
"As summer approaches and the beaches come alive, the LA music scene has awakened a sleeping Giant. From the shores of Newport Beach and the busy streets of the city comes Young the Giant. Though once known as The Jakes, this Southland native quintet has provided the world with the blissful, sweet sounds of a SoCal summer. The LP is an eclectic blend of beautiful melodies and a relaxed vibe of rhythm and harmonizing vocals.
The opening track and perhaps the best on the album, “Apartment,” definitely capture the listeners by surprise and welcomes outstanding vocals and spot-on percussion patterns. “My Body” is an irresistible rock track that cannot simply be played enough, for it rattles the soul and serenades the mind. No summer sing-a-along is complete without a soulful and catchy ballad, and “I Got” serves this purpose. This song is absolutely delightful and shows that the band is quite diverse in style and sounds.
At the end of the day this band shows glimmers or Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend but do so in their own voice. Overall, the album provides a myriad of melodic elements that can’t help but make you smile."

What strikes me about this band is that its' young members (ages 20-23) have found way to develop a fresh & current style that also sounds like they are seasoned veterans of rock and pop music. Additionally, their debut comes stacked with 15 tracks. I haven't been able to absorb the whole album yet, but it sounds like a winner.
